HOLLAND COUNCIL ON AGING
Minutes of meeting held on July 7, 2010


Meeting opened at 10:15 a.m. by Vice-Chairman Tom Baltazar

PRESENT:  COA members: Tom Baltazar, Lowell Nixon, Olive Nixon, Brad Noble and Susan Sanders.  Others: Senior Center Director Margaret Crock, Manager Don Sanders, Outreach Worker Deb Tierney, COA Alternate Earl Johnson, and Activities Coordinator Linda Artruc.

ABSENT:  Bruce Plumley and Jack Reed.
MINUTES:  Motion by Brad to accept the June 2, 2010, minutes was approved.

REPORTS:  

OUTREACH WORKER – Debbie Tierney – Deb submitted her Activity Report.  A detailed report for June 2010 will be provided at the next meeting.

SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR: Margaret Crock.
In June, 1,282 contacts were made and 122 seniors were served.  285 attended the Center, 143 attended congregate meals.  The balance Includes: Intergenerational activities (475), COA meeting (12), blood pressure clinic (3),  cards & games (83), exercise (33), senior tax work off program (15), Veteran’s agent (13), crafts (10), flag retirement ceremony (26), stained glass (16), meetings and activities (32), garden club and gardening (14), mini health fair (26), phone calls (96).  Thank you to the Nixons for their donation of flowers and to Chris Haller for herbs.  

PROGRAM COMMITTEE:  Regular programs:  Lunch is served every Monday as well as on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month – reservations, please.  Monday Veterans Services Agent at noon – reservations needed; Monday Mah Jongg at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.; Tuesday Stained glass classes at 10:30 a.m., “Gentle Yoga” from 11:00 to noon, craft class at 1:00 p.m., and Garden Club 2nd Tuesday 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.; Wednesday 10:00 a.m. Arthritis Foundation exercise program at 10:00 a.m. with Eva Pittsinger, and COA meeting on the 1st Wednesday at 10:15; Thursday 12:30-3:00 p.m. cribbage, and computer classes at 10:00 a.m. with Linda Artruc.  Card games, scrabble and puzzles available daily.  July 12th Genealogy presented by Howie Fife of Holland.  July 19th 12:45 p.m. Laurie Festa will entertain with music and song, funded by Cultural Grant.  July 23rd from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. American Red Cross blood drive, volunteers needed; Tai Chi to begin in July in the afternoons.  A treadmill and recumbent bike are almost ready for use.  July 26th 12:45 p.m. Social Security and SHINE presentation – crucial information.  August 9th 12:45 p.m. Grand Trunk Railroad presentation with author Larry Lowenthal and Howie Fife.  Christian Petersen will discuss hiking trails to Grand Trunk locales here in Holland.  August 16th 12:45 p.m. “Lost Village of East Brimfield” presented by Larry Lowenthal and Howie Fife.  Tai Chi will begin shortly.

SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM: Margaret Crock
Preliminary figures as of June 30, 2010, the Senior Center has used the program in the amount of $2,962.00, Town Clerk $456.00, Assessors officer $272.00, Tax office ($654.00), and Holland Elementary School $2,238.00, Selectmen’s office $192.00. Total YTD is $6,674.00.  Earl pointed out that we need to contact the Selectmen to increase the Senior Tax Work-off allowance from $7,000.00 to $11,000.00 due to the increase in the Senior Tax Abatement from $500.00 to $750.00 per year.

FINANCIAL:  Brad Noble, Treasurer  
June report includes:  Receipts: GSSSI $630.00 and gifts totaling $620.00.  Expenditures: Telephone $66.93, office supplies $238.04, stained glass equipment $520.22, National Grid $88.15, Mah Jongg set $161.95, newsletter printing/mailing $143.83, lawn care $661.95, tables $97.98, Lois Dupre $306.00, exercise classes $75.00, trash pickup program $34.22. Building supplies and equipment $662.42, cleaning supplies $278.74 and salaries $2,692.70.  Surplus funds of $1,342.42 include $1,200.00 to be set aside for servicing the air-conditioning system.

MANAGER: Don Sanders – Parts ordered have been received and installed.  Supplies have been ordered.  Agreement reached that the Senior Center will remain open until 5:00 p.m. every day that the temperature exceeds 90º.  

Motion by Brad to accept all of the above verbal and printed reports was made and approved by the Council on Aging.

OLD BUSINESS:  None.

NEW BUSINESS:   Blinds are being installed.  The spaghetti dinner is this Friday, 7/9.

Motion by Brad to adjourn the meeting at 11:00 a.m.
